Eastern highlife is a modern musical genre that mixes traditional Igbo music with highlife.
During the 1950s, it initially appeared in Nigeria’s southeast area. The music is predominantly guitar-based, with a unique mixture of horns and vocal rhythms. Igbo highlife lyrics are generally performed in Igbo, with some Pidgin English thrown in for good measure.
Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, whose career extended over 40 years, is one of the most important writers and performers of music. Osadebe’s career includes a number of notable songs, notably the 1984 smash “Osondi Owendi,” which established him as a pioneer of the Igbo highlife genre across the world.
