Osadebe’s music mixes the West African style of music of highlife with Nigerian Igbo traditional styles.
Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, sometimes known as simply Osadebe, was a highlife musician from Atani, Nigeria. He is one of the most well-known Igbo highlife performers and the king of highlife music, with a career spanning four decades.
Osadebe was successful in deviating from the traditional big band format set by the music’s forefathers, which valued melodic progressions in the common meter, church hymnal tradition. He was able to entirely turn highlife into an African call-and-response pattern.
His most famous success was the 1984 record “Osondi Owendi,” which established him as a highlife leader and became one of Nigeria’s most successful singles of all time.
