In the early 1960s, Yoruba highlife became popular, and other guitar-band genres from Juju and Fuji soon followed.
E. T. Mensah, the most popular highlife artist of the 1950s, regularly toured Igbo-land, attracting large throngs of adoring admirers. Bobby Benson and His team were the first highlife band to gain national attention in Nigeria. The Mayor’s Dance Band & Jim Lawson also rose to national prominence in the mid-’70s and died in 1971.
Yoruba highlife artists such as Elder I.K Dairo, Pa. Moses Olaiya, Ayinla Omowura, Pa. Fatai Rolling-Dollar, and Dr. Victor Olaiya peaked around the same time.
